What Kind of Idiot Bastard Doesn't Love This Head??

S.A.D. Fest

Last Saturday night we had S.A.D. Fest here at Roup House. It started as a kind of parody of a local punk show held every year called "ADD Fest" where 10 bands play for 10 minutes each. Since that pretty much sounds like the average noise show in the first place we figured we could do better right?

Last of England played first. Erik didn't sleep through our set this time, thankfully, so we let loose with about 5 minutes of really harsh noise during which I took off all my clothes as he pushed people around. Eventually I turned off my gear and, as Erik continued to make super grating feedback tones, pissed in a garbage can in the middle of the floor and then continued to scream at my collected piss for another few minutes.

Wasp Nest Head Dress played next with a sick harsh electronics set including some nice spring reverb and mic abuse, which transitioned into some insane doom metal jams as he grabbed a guitar and another dude jumped behind the house drumkit and joined in.

Satyr/Elfheim did his typical looped & fried guitar thing which sounded good out of a bigger and better amp than usual. Playing was super no-wavey and great.

Brian DiSanto did his a capella pop jumparound thing and I still know more of his lyrics than anyone. He did some GBV covers for the crowd too which is always nice.

Josh Rievel played a video on the living room TV consisting of some gross Internet ephemera and someone (presumably him) trolling people in anonymous chat rooms.

Brother Ong played an insane set of drones using some crazy electrified eastern instruments and later vocals. He's pretty much laid everyone out every time he's played here, check out his new recordings for some really far out psych drone stuff....

Requiem, probably the best industrial act in Pittsburgh, did some sampler and guitar based heavy rhythmic noise that was definitely up to his usual standard despite a slightly reduced setup and no light show... Dave should be more well known and I'm really glad I got to see him play again.

Esti Piels & Autumn Zwibel next did a video projection of some nice footage showing Autumn wandering around some idyllic woods type area while they played a live soundtrack on various collected instruments, turntable, etc. This was their first time doing something like this and it was really good all around.

Dean Cercone was drunk and took a while to remember how to set up his gear, but when he did it was worth the wait. Eschewing his usual set for an improvised one, he filled out his usual sound with a huge chord organ with which he laid out loud and heavy tones over drum, guitar, and vocal loops. Dean is always intense and this was a particularly good example.

J.Lexso (of Triangle & Rhino, formerly known as Ground Zero Mosque) did a solo electronics set (out of four separate guitar amps which we had accumulated) that started out as Wolf Eyes-esque harsh oscillators and sparse heavy rhythms noise which eventually built into a full-on energetic dance music track that no one expected. Some kind of NES racing game vibe at the end there. It was awesome.

Poor Kitty, the best band of Roup House imo, did another minimal noise and poetry set in the kitchen. Lucy spoke quietly into the mic as Seth played weird tape loops, with both of them scraping and banging various household items on top. It's hard to explain why or how these performances are so intense but they always are.

Buoyhood and Artie did a keyboard+guitar drone set which sounded very full & lush, very soothing kind of Emeralds vibes, but I can't give too many details since I was wandering around a lot at this point.

Homeless Gospel Choir is a long-running Christian folkpunk dude (completing the Special Christian Hour as Seth from Poor Kitty and Zach from Buoyhood are all church buddies ) and everybody seemed to enjoy his set a lot. I was hanging out upstairs for most of it so unfortunately I can't give too many details here either.

Burnout War Cry & Ken Kaminski (aka A Dentist and A Chiropractor) played a nice set of minimal, eai style improv with BoWC on his typical suitcase full of found objects and Ken on pedal feedback loops in a special modified suitcase with an amp built into it... This got extremely quiet and sparse at times, BoWC demonstrated some great vocal noises, and Ken's electronics fit in with the busy junk percussion perfectly. Some rich looking college girls who wandered in, apparently, were overheard trying to figure out what they had just seen: "you know how he said they were called a dentist and a chiropractor?? i think they were trying to make the noises in a doctors office or something......"

Ivory Weeds did a solo folk set on guitar and banjo which I missed entirely as I was setting up for my final performance. Same for Kid Brother, who did some 70s folkrock type stuff in the basement, playing guitar and singing out of his home stereo system as a makeshift PA.

And finally Matt Wellins and I did a guitar+electronics set as Week End. This set was supposed to be a 4 member improv group, but the other two people bailed, and Matt didn't want to do it since his saxophone broke. I convinced him to anyway and he ended up mic'ing my guitar amp and manipulating my playing with his own original MAX/MSP patches, and I think it sounded awesome, it was pretty low key throughout and a good way to end the night.


(Three acts - Ryan Emmett, Supervolcano, and Trogpite - bailed due to sickness or other commitments, which actually kind of worked out because, amazingly, we ended up staying pretty much on schedule and ended exactly on time despite starting an hour late....!!!!)

Overall this was a fucking awesome evening, a great party, and well worth the anxiety and chaos of planning it!! There were a ton of people there, who mostly wandered in and out as their friends played or for whatever reason, so depending on the hour there was a pretty different crowd. Roup House wins again!!!!
